The City of Brandon received a grant from the Community Trust Fund to purchase a new slide in a playground renovation project in a low-income neighborhood in the city. |
| Since 1995, the Foundation has awarded grants totaling more than $16 million. Grants from donor-advised funds, which make up the majority of grants issued annually, are awarded throughout the year upon the recommendations of individual donor advisors. Grants from the Foundation's field-of-interest and unrestricted funds are made through a competitive application process.
During the final quarter of the 2006-07 fiscal year a committee, comprised of former and current Grants Committee chairmen and those with a history serving on the CFGJ Grants Committee, was brought together and given the task to review the current structure of the competitive grants process and make recommendations for its future direction. This committee reviewed the structure and accomplishments of the discretionary grants program and offered its recommendations on how the grants program could better serve the community at-large. After an extensive review process, which involved feedback from our various stakeholders, the committee offered its recommendations on how the grants program could better serve the community at-large given the limited amount of resources available.
As a result of this process, CFGJ is exploring a new initiative for its competitive grants program. In January 2008, the CFGJ Board of Trustees approved the decision to focus in the area of Youth Development for the next three years. Grants will focus specifically on education and youth safety and will target the age group represented in the 6th through 12th grade years. Through this effort CFGJ aspires to have a greater impact on youth development in the tri-county area by awarding fewer, targeted grants and measuring the results.
